Problems with fast-forward/rewind/resuming play

I am encountering a problem with Plex on my FireTV where when I am playing a video, if I try to fast-forward it will just restart from the beginning instead so fast forward doesn't work at all. I run into the same issue with resuming play if the video has been stopped, or trying to rewind. I am not facing this issue with every file I try to play, but enough that it is a serious problem for me (seems to be about 50/50 now).

I just updated to the latest FireTV app a couple of days ago, but I was having this issue before that, and am still having it after the update. I have tried restarting the FireTV and Plex server, installing the latest Plex server updates, nothing has helped.

When I play the video in the Plex Web App on my computer, or on my iPhone app it seems to work fine, and let me fast forward etc. I am currently only seeing this problem on my FireTV.

I am hoping someone can help me out with this problem.

Android TV app on Sony Bravia TV, some questions

Hi,

Recently I bought a new Sony Bravia 65XE9005 (X900E) LCD TV which runs the latest Android TV version 7.0. There are two things that I noticed with the Plex for Android TV app.

  1. All files are being transcoded by my PMS. No direct play at all. I've configured the app to do direct play/stream.
  2. Dolby Digital 5.1 streams are transcoded to stereo when using the optical out on the TV to a soundbar.

So, why is this Plex for Android TV app on a Sony TV transcoding everything while the Sony supports all of the popular formats and codecs? For example, the Netflix app nicely outputs DD 5.1 over optical, so this is a working feature.

Transcoding is a nogo for me because this brand new 2017 Sony model supports every modern codec and container. Is it possible a Plex developer could explain why this occurs on Sony Android TV's?

Plex for Android TV version is 6.6.0
PMS is version 1.9.5.4339

plex android auto - browsing locked for safety, but only on local media

I'm very grateful for android auto integration of the Android plex app, however I have hit on a very annoying, and app breaking "feature". Whenever the car begins to move, you cannot browse albums under the artists on your local device, as they become greyed out, and you occasionally will see browsing locked for safety. I appreciate that this may be a nanny state feature where plex thinks that they should impose their sense of safety on me the driver, but what about my passenger? They can't change the track on my behalf because we are moving. How could that be claimed to be for safety, it just makes it unusable. Even more frustrating is the fact that this intentionally restrictive limitation only applies to your local device, not to libraries on your plex server, or shared libraries, which results in you wasting your data allowance, so your passenger can navigate your music library while moving. If it's a bug, please fix it, and if it's intentionally restricted, either consider that it's not necessarily the driver messing around, or take a consistent approach to remote libraries and local libraries.

Dear Plex,
Thank you for working on the xbox plex app. Did you guys get enough beta testers for this software? It’s got more bugs than windows 98 ME! Look i know it is hard to make apps for the xbox one, i get that, and i have no criticisms on the new interface... everything looks pretty... but i read a promise of faster load times... less whirling... etc etc.

I’m calling BS here. Half of my 1080p content is garbled, has that look like i am trying to watch the playboy channel back in the 90s when you didnt pay for it... y’all know what i’m talking about. And the load times are ridiculous.

I’ll give any software engineer an add to my server, and/or a log if need be. Please dont get rid of support for old app until you fix this.

Need help choosing a NAS

Hi

I've had a Drobo for years now and have come to realise the limitations of it with regards to Plex. I need an upgrade. If I can give an idea of what I'm looking for I'd appreciate some suggestions. I've come to the Synology group since I'm not interested in the HDMI outputs or remote controls of the QNAP since I run my plex through Apple TV.

My needs aren't excessive. I'm just one home user and my budget is around £500 (I can go higher if it's worth it). Either a 2 or 4 bay. Preference for 4 bay for expandability.

The hardware encryption in the synology interests me as I'll be using it for general backup as well but I'm not sure if that goes well with plex... The nas will be for plex media first and foremost.

Thanks for any help on this

So, this is gonna be a bit of a rant but it DOES have a point.
Plex - especially after pushing Plex Pass so hard - must begin to take it's customers more seriously. That means YES you DO have to acknowledge issues with your product running on new OSes such as when Apple updates to tvOS11 or iOS11 or even High Sierra. Yes, you SHOULD take responsibility for bugs and provide a bug tracker WITH estimated times of repair of bugs. ...and YES you SHOULD be getting pre-release versions of Apple Software and testing your product on them, then release fixes WHEN Apple releases final GM's of said products. This is business. Do it!
...here's a big one: NO, you should NOT become iTunes + iPhoto all-in-one. Fix what you have out in the wild, THEN add features.
I am an iOS/tvOS developer myself. I'VE had access to all the software for MONTHS! I got lucky. My software required very few fixes - but Plex is in the middle of a huge debacle with iOS and tvOS right now. There are a lot of things that are broken and many need fixes. STOP branching out and doing photos, live tv, etc if you can't make the original product work!

Plex losing subtitle while playing

Since Plex last update (1.9.1.4272), the subtitle disappears after 1~2 minutes playing the video. This happens to me with downloaded subtitle or subtitle got by Opensubtitle native plugin on Plex.

I think it's not hardware issue:
i5 7500
16GB ram DDR4 2400MHz
HDD 1TB 7200RPM (with 150gb free)

Recently added randomly decides that old movies are new

I recently switched (2 months) to using a Shield for Plex instead of my home PC and in general I'm very happy with the switch. One thing that's bugging me is that aaaaallllll my movies were listed as 'recently added' 2 months ago, which I kind of get, it's annoying but I understand.

However, every few weeks, it decides that several movies that were already listed (that I've had for years) are now new and lists them at the top of 'recently added'.

With the very long 'RA' retention (2+ months now) and it randomly deciding some old movies are brand new, my RA list is very long and not accurate. So I guess I have two questions:

Can I change the window for RA such that it only lists movies for, say, a month instead of multiple?

What might be causing Plex to re-list old movies as RA, thereby making the list confusing and unnaturally long?

Disappointed with PMP 2.0+, looking for advice

I'm pretty disappointed with PMP 2.0+ running on an Intel NUC with Windows 10. I use Plex in a home theater, and have found that due to sleep reliability issues, the best way for me to make sure Plex is always ready to go (when automated with the remote) is to completely shut down the box when finished. Unfortunately, the latest PMP 2.0+ builds seem to have removed the Power Off keyboard short cuts, and sleeping the machine causes problems with the app not being full screen.

It's also worth noting I am not convinced the new UI is an advancement. However, recognize everything has growing pains, and am willing to give it a chance later. Not trying to just rain on the parade. What I am asking, however, is if there is an option to use the latest 1.X version of PMP with the most recent media server builds - at least for a while, until 2.0 grows up? Or, if anyone has other suggestions?

Buenas tardes a todos. Llevo días interesándome en cómo poder instalar en mi servidor NAS QNAP TS-451plus en el programa Plex el archivo iptv con una lista de canales dentro, he visto en este foro como se hace en Synology pero no lo he visto para qnap.
Si alguien supiera al respecto agradecería su ayuda o bine un link en el que se explique como hacerlo.

Are movie chapters accessible within Plex Media Player (web)?

I'm aware that movie chapters are supported by default in the Plex iOS app and I'm assuming that this information is being supplied by chapter metadata captured in Plex Media Server during initial interrogation by PMS agents in online databases. However does anyone know if chapter view is supported in the Plex's own (web / browser-based) PMS? It otherwise seems counter-intuitive that chapter information is captured by Plex in PMS and served to the iOS App, but not available in Plex's own web App??

Subtitle Issue

Hi

Is anyone else getting a issue with subtitles disappearing after 30secs to a minute after start of playback of videos. I've updated to the latest xbox plex player and now subtitles seem to be now playing. (srt files in the same folder as the video files) if I stop and restume the comeback again for a shortwhile before disappearing again.

Plex Music library: Different formats of the same album (FLAC)

Dear all,

I have several albums in both mp3 and FLAC format, eg. as FLAC for local playback on my stereo and as mp3 for remote playback for my mobile devices (I know that there is a basic possibility of transcoding but I used to rip my CD in both formats long ago and do not want to delete the files).

I separated those albums by appending [FLAC] to the album tag in the metadata. All other media libraries (SONOS etc.) show two different albums of the same artists (e.g. U2 - War and U2 - War [FLAC]), which is exactly what I intended. Strangely, the Plex music library only does so for certain albums, but not for all; sometimes, it shows only one album with every track twice (the mp3 version and the FLAC version), disregarding the [FLAC] appendix.

Does anybody have an idea, how the albums show be tagged/organized to ensure that the Plex Music Server has two separate entries for the FLAC and the non-FLAC album?

Your thoughts are highly appreciated.

Plex Media Server crashes when I try to play movies

Repost from the Plex subreddit (nobody has answered on Reddit).

I've been using Plex for years on my Mac Mini. It's not a new installation or anything like that. The media lives on a NAS, but all the metadata is in the default place. Last week Plex started crashing whenever I tried to play a video file. The app loads fine and I can tweak settings, &c. but can't play media. I've tried:

  • Quitting Plex and restarting
  • Rebooting the Mac Mini
  • Rebooting the Apple TV
  • Playing video via the Plex web app
  • Rebooting the NAS
  • Reinstalling Plex from a fresh download (just replacing the app, not a completely fresh installation)
  • Trying to play different video files

When I quit Plex or reinstall it, it seems to work at first - I can start to play a movie. But then if I pause it and play something else, it crashes. Then when I start it again and try to play something, it crashes.

Other information:

  • Have you checked the Plex knowledge base and searched on the sub and Google: yes.
  • Server version: 1.9.5.4339.
  • OS: Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.6 (Mac Mini 2011).
  • Clients, w/ versions, if applicable: Apple TV 4, Web.
  • What you did? I tried to play a movie.
  • What happened? Plex Media Server crashed.
  • What you expected? I expected the movie to play. It's been working for years and this problem just started last week.
  • What are your (relevant) settings? I have no idea what's relevant here, but I'm confident that I probably messed something up, and that somebody here can identify it.
  • Link to logs (optional but recommended): Following the directions here, I turned on logging, replicated the crash and went to look for my logs, but there was no Logs folder in ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server. The only folders are: Plug-in Support, Plug-ins, Crash Reports, Codecs, Updates, Metadata, Media, Scanners, Thumbnails, Site Configurations. There's also a file, update-log.txt. Would downloading the logs from Plex > Settings > Help be useful?

Add current song to playlist

Is there an option on Plex Web to add current playing song to a playlist with a shortcut? When I want to add a certain song to a playlist, I have to select the current song and go into the album menu and select the option for that song to add it to a playlist. Is there a faster way to do this?

How do I sort movies in the Plex app on Apple TV?

I've used many different client apps to access my Plex server in the past. The Plex app for Samsung Smart TV, Plex app for iOS, and of course the Plex Home Theater in my browser. They all have the ability to sort movies by various parameters like:
-Date added
-Release date
-Date viewed
-Name
-Rating
-Resolution
-Duration

But the Plex app for Apple TV doesn't seem to offer this feature. Either that or I'm missing something very obvious. I can easily view Collections and filter movies on Apple TV, but they're always sorted alphabetically by default and I can't seem to find any way to sort them by something else.

This is extremely annoying for many obvious reasons. Why is this not possible on Apple TV?

Plex ignores in EPG file

I just installed Live TV & DVR on Plex Media Server (Version 1.9.4.4325)

Added my own EPG file and everything works perfect, but i see one bug in Plex. It ignores the channel display name in the XMLTV EPG file. See the screenshots below.
