Resolution or bitrate exceeds maximum allowed - Video transcoded

$

Hello,

Was there any update on the Android TV app related to maximum bitrate management?
Some of my movies are getting transcoded because they exceed the maximum bitrate allowed. I think it was not happening few days ago. It also gets transcoded if the Direct Play is forced, which is really annoying !

Here is an example of file on which this is happening :
Codec HEVC
Bitrate 9416 kbps
Bit Depth 8
Chroma Subsampling 4:2:0
Color Range tv
Color Space bt709
Frame Rate 23.976 fps
Height 960
Level 12.0
Profile main
Ref Frames 1
Width 1920

I believe that this video could easily be played by Shield TV and does not need any video transcoding.

I could not find any option to change that maximum bitrate limit.

My Plex Server is on Ubuntu 16.04, version 1.3.3.3148 and my player in on NVIDIA Shield TV.

Thanks.

Can someone from Plex answer why the Server is constantly disappearing and when it will be fixed?

Going through this forum I can see many people with the same issue but no fix from Plex.

This is the 2nd time since Saturday my Shield server has just switched itself off, sometimes a reboot fixes it, sometimes 4 reboots fixes it, sometimes uninstalling the server and re-installing form the play store (as it isn't included anymore) fixes it.

It's becoming very very annoying and no response from Plex themselves!

What media formats are supported?

Hi guys!

i've been transcoding on the fly for a while now, and i have recently been thinking of pre transcoding to spare my cpu a little. Im wondering what i should optimize my videoes to in plex.
Does anyone know or have a solution? my cpu is running around 60% when transcoding, which generates alot of heat.

Video fails because of having to transcode video after being muxed from mp4 to Mkv (plays in Emby)

Hi there,
I used to rip my Simpsons DVDs to mp4 back in the days to preserve them. They played fine in Plex. Then I decided to remux them to Mkv for various reasons. Now they don't play anymore (the server is not powerful enough to convert video). Only my Simpsons videos fail that way, every other video plays fine on Android.
Note: I run plex server on a raspberrypi 2

This is the meta data of one of the failing videos:

I see those errors and would be happy if that meant that it really just can't be played on Android, but it worked just fine when I tried it with Emby.

Any help what I could try? Any settings on my server or any of the profiles on the disk I could tinker with?

thanks a lot

PlexKodiConnect (PKC)

Combine the best frontend media player Kodi with the best multimedia backend server Plex

PKC combines the best of Kodi - ultra smooth navigation, beautiful and highly customizable user interfaces and playback of any file under the sun - and the Plex Media Server.

Have a look at some screenshots to see what's possible.

Content

Warning

Use at your own risk! This plugin assumes that you manage all your videos with Plex (and none with Kodi). You might lose data already stored in the Kodi video and music databases as this plugin directly changes them. Don't worry if you want Plex to manage all your media (like you should ;-)).

What does PKC do and how is it different from the official 'Plex for Kodi'?

With other Plex addons for Kodi such as the official Plex for Kodi or PlexBMC there are a couple of issues:

  • Other Kodi addons such as NextAired, remote apps and others won't work
  • You can only use special Kodi skins
  • Slow speed: when browsing data has to be retrieved from the server. Especially on slower devices this can take too much time and you will notice artwork being loaded slowly while you browse the library
  • All kinds of workarounds are needed to get the best experience on Kodi clients

PKC synchronizes your media from your Plex server to the native Kodi database. Because PKC uses the native Kodi database, the above limitations are gone!

  • Use any Kodi skin you want!
  • You can browse your media at full speed, images are cached
  • All other Kodi addons will be able to "see" your media, thinking it's normal Kodi stuff

Some people argue that PKC is 'hacky' because of the way it directly accesses the Kodi database. See here for a more thorough discussion.

Download and Installation

Download

Install PKC via the PlexKodiConnect Kodi repository (we cannot use the official Kodi repository as PKC messes with Kodi's databases). See the installation guideline on how to do this.

Possibly UNSTABLE BETA version: Download

Important Notes

  1. If you are using a low CPU device like a Raspberry Pi or a CuBox, PKC might be instable or crash during initial sync. Lower the number of threads in the PKC settings under Sync Options: Limit artwork cache threads: 5
    Don't forget to reboot Kodi after that.
  2. Compatibility:

    • PKC is currently not compatible with Kodi's Video Extras plugin. Deactivate Video Extras if trailers/movies start randomly playing.
    • PKC is not (and will never be) compatible with the MySQL database replacement in Kodi. In fact, PKC replaces the MySQL functionality because it acts as a "man in the middle" for your entire media library.
    • If another plugin is not working like it's supposed to, try to use PKC direct paths
  3. If you post logs, your Plex tokens might be included. Be sure to double and triple check for tokens before posting any logs anywhere by searching for token

I'm not in any way affiliated with Plex. Thank you very much for a small donation via ko-fi.com and PayPal if you appreciate PKC.

What is currently supported?

PKC currently provides the following features:

  • All Plex library types

    • Movies and Home Videos
    • TV Shows
    • Music
    • Pictures and Photos
  • Different PKC interface languages:

    • English
    • German
    • More coming up
  • Plex Watch Later / Plex It!

  • Plex Companion: fling Plex media (or anything else) from other Plex devices to PlexKodiConnect
  • Plex Transcoding
  • Automatically download more artwork from Fanart.tv, just like the Kodi addon Artwork Downloader

    • Banners
    • Disc art
    • Clear logos
    • Landscapes
    • Clear art
    • Extra fanart backgrounds
  • Automatically group movies into movie sets

  • Direct play from network paths (e.g. "\\server\Plex\movie.mkv") instead of streaming from slow HTTP (e.g. "192.168.1.1:32400"). You have to setup all your Plex libraries to point to such network paths. Do have a look at the wiki here
  • Delete PMS items from the Kodi context menu

Known Larger Issues

Solutions are unlikely due to the nature of these issues

  • A Plex Media Server "bug" leads to frequent and slow syncs, see here for more info
  • Plex Music when using Addon paths instead of Native Direct Paths: Kodi tries to scan every(!) single Plex song on startup. This leads to errors in the Kodi log file and potentially even crashes. See the Github issue for more details
  • Plex Music when using Addon paths instead of Native Direct Paths: You must have a static IP address for your Plex media server if you plan to use Plex Music features
  • External Plex subtitles (in separate files, e.g. mymovie.srt) can be used, but it is impossible to label them correctly and tell what language they are in. However, this is not the case if you use direct paths

Background Sync:
The Plex Server does not tell anyone of the following changes. Hence PKC cannot detect these changes instantly but will notice them only on full/delta syncs (standard settings is every 60 minutes)

  • Toggle the viewstate of an item to (un)watched outside of Kodi
  • Changing details of an item, e.g. replacing a poster

However, some changes to individual items are instantly detected, e.g. if you match a yet unrecognized movie.

Issues being worked on

Have a look at the Github Issues Page. Before you open your own issue, please read How to report a bug.

What could be in the pipeline for future development?

  • Plex channels

  • Movie extras (trailers already work)

  • Playlists
  • Music Videos

The Wiki can be found here and will hopefully answer all your questions. You can even edit the wiki yourself!

Everything is being transcoded

I tried using Plex before but dropped it because it wanted to transcode absolutely everything. But I thought that it might have changed, but no....
No matter what files I try, it tries to f*cking transcode it. It don't get why it's so poorly made, it drives me nuts.

I don't ever want Plex to transcode, is it really not possible to completely disable transcoding?!

Okay, dont with the rant about **** coding. I like the UI so I'm willing to give it another go. Here's the setup:

  • Synology DS1813+

  • NVIDIA Shield TV

  • Google Chromecast Ultra
  • LG 65" 4K (Shield), LG 42" FullHD (CC Ultra)

Okay, so playing from Kodi on the Shield works perfect. No matter what files, whether its x264 or x265, it just works! Direct streaming everything.
Trying the DS Video app from Synology everything, apart from videos with DTS or x265, works flawlessly - no matter if it's on the Shield or the CC Ultra.

However.... trying Plex on either device results in utter sh*t. Amazing.
The files I've tried with:

File #1 (7.41 GB, 22m)
Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1920x1080 24fps (h264 high L4.0, yuv420p, 1920x1080)
Audio: DTS 48000Hz stereo 1536kbps (dts, 48000 Hz, stereo, 1536 kb/s)
Subtitle: UTF-8 [S: English [eng] (srt)]

File #2 (90 MB, 1h20m)
Video: HVC1 1280x720 23.976fps [V: hevc main, yuv420p, 1280x720]
Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo [A: Stereo [eng] (aac he-aac, 48000 Hz, stereo)
Subtitle: UTF-8 [S: English [eng] (srt)]

File #3 (4.36 GB, 1h23m)
Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 23.976fps (h264 high L4.1, yuv420p, 1280x720)
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 384kbps [A: English [eng] (ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s)

I've set the subtitles transcode setting to "only image formats".

So.. how do I get Plex to stop being massively worse than Kodi or DS Video ?

Plexconnect DNS shutting down randomly

$

I'm having a problem with the Plexconnect DNS randomly shutting down, here's a copy of my log: http://pastebin.com/fTPVizjY and my system information:

OS: Windows 8 x64

Apple TV version: 3

Apple TV firmware: 6.0

Apple TV IP: 192.168.1.178

DNS server: 192.168.1.131

Plex Media Server IP: 192.168.1.131

Plex Media Server: 0.9.8.6

Plexconnect version: 0.2

My Settings.cfg file:

port_pms = 32400
port_webserver = 80
ip_plexconnect = 0.0.0.0
certfile = ./assets/certificates/trailers.pem
ip_dnsmaster = 8.8.8.8
loglevel = Normal
enable_dnsserver = True
logpath = .
ip_pms = 192.168.1.131
enable_plexgdm = False
port_ssl = 443
enable_webserver_ssl = True
ip_webserver = 0.0.0.0
prevent_atv_update = True
port_dnsserver = 53
enable_plexconnect_autodetect = True

This crash/shut down has happened multiple times and always ends with the following in the log file.

10:09:32 DNSServer: DNS request received!
10:09:32 DNSServer: Source: ('192.168.1.178', 51646)
10:09:32 DNSServer: Domain: atv.plexconnect
10:09:32 DNSServer: ***intercept request
10:09:32 DNSServer: -> DNS response: 192.168.1.131
10:09:32 DNSServer: Shutting down.

I have tried a few things with no success: turning off PlexGDM as suggested in another thread, making sure both the computer and the aTV have static IPs, have tried both Plexconnect version 0.2 and the latest Github version.

I can't seem to isolate why it happens, it seems to happen when I'm in the middle of accessing things on the aTV (like after a video was finished), or after the aTV wakes from sleep. I should also note that Plexconnect works perfectly fine before the DNS shutdown and a restart of the computer/restarting the python program fixes the problem. Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

How can Plex for Xbox 360 play the Optimized version of a file?

So I optimized a show so my parents could watch it on my old XBOX 360. But Plex still picks the file it has to transcode both audio and video for eventhough I have a Direct Play version.

Slow filtered querys

Edit:
I changed the title because the problem is not with optimization, it is with slow filter querys.

~~I have a problem with slow querys that have filters like unwatched, from what I have read you need to optimize the database and I have tried that but it did not help.
When I checked the logs i get these messages stating that there is a problem optimizing the database and this might be the problem why I have slow querys.

Does anyone have any idea why it fails to optimize the database?~~

[REL] Dreambox plugin 0.1 is done

A first draft for your viewing pleasure

Hey everyone,
Early January I gave the very talented Sander a challenge, and we worked a week on it. The challenge was to try and create a Dreambox plugin which I could use in my setup which would fetch my cousins dreambox content.
I am pleased to say that we have a working first draft which you guys can tryout if you want to.

It uses the raw stream at a specific IP, but we also tried to build in support for having a transcoder at a seperate address in case people outside your network wants to view, but has limited bandwidth.
The development of that plugin is on hold at the moment, but you are welcome to try it out: https://github.com/sander1/Dreambox.bundle

EDIT: The above link is for the original version which now is outdated. The latest greeeny101-version can be found here: https://github.com/g...Dreambox.bundle

Go into the plugin, choose preferences. In the host field you add the IP address to your dreambox. In the "web interface port" you add the port which the web interface uses. This plugin uses the web interface to change channels. The field called "Streaming video port" should contain the port from which you stream transcoded material (if any).

Maybe in the future Sander will have time to help me flesh this out, but for now this is what exists. Let me know how it works for you guys.

Limitations: This plugin is only tested with the web interface that is called Enigma Web Interface - Pli Edition. Until more development is done to support the Dreambox API, no other web interface will work I believe.

hey guys, I tried sharing my server via remote to my ipad when I am outside of my network and it just does not work.

It always gives a red cross next to internet which means it denies the access for my server to the internet.

can anybody please help?

my modem is a ch7485e from tele columbus for cable internet access and my router which does DHCP and stuff is the TL-WR940N / TL-WR941ND.

I had no luck so far :(

Chromecast Ultra profile doesn't support HEVC

Trying to cast a 1080p HEVC file and it's transcoding. Couple of things I notice from the log below:

  • It's choking on the HEVC level. What is level 120? I thought that the level system was similar to H264.

  • No mention of DTS or AC3 in the supported audio list

If I manually change the Chromecast profile to be more lenient it all suddenly starts working.

Does Rasplex allow me to connect to a non-local server?

So I've been using Plex.com inside Chrome for a few months to stream from my server to my laptop and several other computers but I don't keep my server at my house.

I installed Rasplex but I didn't ever get a chance to login to my account. Now Rasplex just doesn't see any media.

How do I login?

Thanks!

PMS traffic shaping on linux
I just started using Plex recently. My home router (an Asus RTN-56u, so please don't tell me to get a WRT54GL with DDWRT) doesn't handle QoS properly, and I'm allowing people access to my PMS that may not comply with my request to limit streaming speeds, so I wanted to limit PMS's outgoing speed at the linux level. There are several ways to do this; the easiest is to start PMS with a program called "trickle", but from what I could tell, trickle sounds awesome but simply does not work. My way is much more complicated, but with a cheatsheet here, it should be fairly easy to follow.

I hope this helps someone; traffic shaping on Linux is surprisingly badly documented. I had to go back to manpages and one guy's FAQ on a blog dated 2010 to get this working.

Drop this in /etc/rc.local. It will limit the server to a maximum of 2500 kilobits outgoing on port 32400.

#######

### Sleep for a second
sleep 1

### Delete all TC rules for eth0
/sbin/tc qdisc del dev eth0 root

### Activate queueing discipline
/sbin/tc qdisc add dev eth0 root handle 1:0 htb

### Define class allowed 2500kbit burst to 2500kbit (kbps=kiloBYTES)
/sbin/tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:0 classid 1:10 htb rate 2500kbit ceil 2500kbit prio 0

### Create iptables mangle rule for outgoing port 32400 (Plex Media Server)
/sbin/iptables -A OUTPUT -t mangle -p tcp --sport 32400 ! --dst 192.168.5.0/24 -j MARK --set-mark 10

### Assign the rule to the proper qdisc
/sbin/tc filter add dev eth0 parent 1:0 prio 0 protocol ip handle 10 fw flowid 1:10

### Notes
## show TC rules
# /sbin/tc -s -d class show dev eth0
## Show iptables mangle rules
# /sbin/iptables -t mangle -n -v -L
## Show actual bandwidth being used on 32400
