OpenFLIXR 1.0

OpenFLIXR Media Server (OpenFLIXR in short) is an all-in-one media server for downloading and serving virtually any kind of media you can think of. On the one side we have incredible useful tools to download media like CouchPotato, SickRage and Headphones, on the other side we have Plex Media Server to bring everything to your screens. Be it tablets, TVs, PCs, you name it. Everything is web based, including monitoring and management tools.

It will auto-update to keep everything running smooth and is preconfigured with sensible defaults. To be able to use OpenFLIXR, you’ll need a hypervisor like VirtualBox (Open Source), VMWare Fusion / Workstation / Player / ESXi, Parallels Desktop, KVM / unRAID or Microsoft Hyper-V.

It’s ready to go in a couple of minutes!

OpenFLIXR
After 4 beta’s, 4 months of hard labour and many sleepless nights I think OpenFLIXR is ready to justify a 1.0 release.

Focus for 1.0 was maximum stability, speed, lower resources and fixing known bugs.
I even threw in a couple of features :)

I also settled on openflixr.com website design, logo, tidied up the github repo’s and created a clean landing page.

From this release forward you don’t have to download the complete VM when I release an update so you can safely configure everything without worrying you have to start over.

There are two kinds of updates.
1. Updates to the Setup Wizard, which automatically install when you (re)boot OpenFLIXR.
2. Updates to OpenFLIXR itself, like new features or fixes.

Instructions on how to update OpenFLIXR will follow with the next release.

Changelog 1.0

  • Upgraded OS to Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) (LTS!)
  • Upgraded PHP to 7.0 (Significant performance improvement)
  • Updated everything *pip* and *npm* (including node, from 0.10.25 -> 6.2.2! Significant performance improvement) (also scheduled)
  • Disabled: IPv6 (causing issues)
  • Enabled: memcached (speed)
  • Wizard: MySQL password change (backend)
  • Wizard: Plexrequest password change + Sonarr API (backend)
  • Fixed: Weekly Update script
  • Fixed: Network Hang (Need confirmation)
  • Fixed: Mounting /mnt/downloads to a local HD, should now create subdirs
  • Fixed: Letsencrypt (caught another exception (don’t change nginx config when errors are found), and generate a certificate AFTER writing the config file (I really shouldn’t code after midnight))
  • Fixed: Time drifting, installed NTPd (+ config)
  • Changed: out with log.io, in with rtail (https://github.com/kilianc/rtail)
  • Removed: Syncthing. I decided the feature set was out of place for OpenFLIXR and too much of a security reliability
  • Removed: Wetty. It didn’t feel right to have that much power in the web interface
  • New: Filebot (for future implementation) (https://sourceforge.net/projects/filebot/)
  • New: Monit (will automatically restart service when failed, should also fix a couple of reports I got where some modules wouldn’t start after (re)boot) (https://bitbucket.org/tildeslash/monit/)
  • New: Landing page
  • New: Online Help. Integrated “The Lounge”, an IRC client that connects to #openflixr. You can ask me for help when I’m online or help each other!
  • Changed: disabled swap, added 1GB RAM (3GB total) (hopefully fixes starving after weeks of use)
  • Tons of misc fixes, tweaks, cleaning up and polishing

Below are known issues, I will try to fix them in a future update :)

  • Jackett and Plexrequest: manually change own API keys
  • Sonarr change NZB API key (SABnzbd / NZBget)
  • Spotweb: manually enter Usenet server
  • Ubooquity: manually change password (important!)
  • Home-Assistant: doesn’t work yet with reverse proxy. Use IP:8123

Future of OpenFLIXR

I have a couple of things I’d like to add to OpenFLIXR other than bugfixes.

  • 2-factor authentication
  • Filebot integration with Torrents
  • Setup/Wizard enhancements like:
  • Wizard: Newznab configuration (HTPC Manager, CouchPotato, Sickrage, Mylar, Headphones) (This weekend)

    • backup / restore settings for different stuff

    • auto-update OpenFLIXR setting

    • user defined scheduled updates
    • read back current settings
    • easy mounts
    • automate plex tokens for: couchpotato, sickrage, plexpy, plexrequests and htpcmanager

Online help

OpenFLIXR comes with online help. Basically it's a web based IRC client where it will connect to the #openflixr channel. When you click "Help" you will see the following form.

Online help

You should choose a unique Nick and Username or else it will fail to connect.

Have fun! I sure did creating OpenFLIXR and learned a lot in the process :D

OpenFLIXR Online Update - Changelog 1.1.7

To update from 1.0 to 1.1.7

Login to console or SSH
Execute sudo updateopenflixr and enter your password
System will reboot when done
  • Update Ubooquity to 1.10.1
  • Fix Ubooquity out of memory with large collections
  • Fix trusted root certificates
  • Fix sub-zero not working in Plex
  • Fix landing page offline message
  • Plex Media Server machine ID was cloned
After the fix, should you already had setup Plex Media Server in OpenFLIXR, all you have to do is go to:
http://IPADDRESS:32400/web/ and go accept the Terms of Use and login to your Plex account.
When you previously shared libraries with friends, yu have to share them again because of the new ID.

  • Security updates

  • Performance updates
  • Enhanced privacy (internet facing servers)
  • Even better performance
  • Added ability to manually update Plex Media Server
  • Set your own ubooquity admin password (/comics/admin , default pass = openflixr. No security issue as this virtual dir is protected)
  • Improved SSLlabs score with zero drawbacks and improved security
  • Improved HTTP/2 performance
  • Local caching DNS resolver (you can’t select your own DNS servers from now on, Google’s are used as they are extremely fast)
  • Cache landing page better
  • Fixed Plexrequest Sickrage/Sonarr where they were both activated resulting in not functioning for people that already went through the web wizard.
You will find both sonarr and sickrage de-activated in plexrequest after this patch with a placeholder API key so you should (re)enable one of them yourself and enter correct info.

OpenFLIXR Web Wizard Update - Changelog 1.1.1

Web Wizard updates are automatically installed at boot time.
So when you (re)boot OpenFLIXR you will get the latest version.

  • Plexrequest Sickrage/Sonarr fixed where they were both activated resulting in not functioning
Can’t find another solution than disabling Sonarr in plexrequest where you have to enable it yourself with the correct info.
When you go for the recommended and default Sickrage, there is nothing changed.

  • Fixed 504 ‘Gateway Timed Out’ at finishing setup, now gives you a nice countdown

  • Fixed rare condition where someone would enter non IP addresses in ‘static’ and switch back to dhcp, resulting in corrupted network settings
  • Some cleanup and visual changes
  • A small fix where you can't choose your own DNS server from now on.
See release notes of OpenFLIXR Online Update 1.1.7
