Plex on NAS to client = buffer, Plex on PC from NAS to client = smooth. Why?

Hi. I've been using Plex for a few years now, running it locally on my N40L Microserver hardwired through Gb ethernet to my client (Plex client on LG TV, OLEDE655). I've only ever had issues with buffering when I wasn't able to use Direct Play (I wish there was a way to disable the transcoder, another post..).

However since around May17 I've found that I am getting more and more weird buffer type symptoms in my setup, mostly with high bit rate BR rips, but not always. The reason I say weird is because if the buffer icon pops up I can pause and play immediately (within 1 sec) and the video plays perfectly immediately.

I've recently tried installing Plex on another PC to the same client, and this setup works perfectly despite still using the Microserver as the storage. This tells me that bandwidth isn't the issue (PC, NAS, TV, router are all Gb ethernet). Direct Play works and so transcoding isn't the issue either.

This didn't happen at the beginning of the year. Does this sound like there is a setting in Plex Server on the Microserver that can be tweaked, or has there has been an update in Plex server which increases overheads somehow, or another reason??
