VPN & Plex just will not work

I know this topic has been visited previously (more than once) but it's just that it still doesn't seem to work.

Servers route to the internet (and ultimately the Plex Cloud)
Plex Server --> VPN --> Internet

I understand and completely agree that by using a VPN the IP address advertised to the Plex Cloud Service will be that of the VPN server to which I am connected.

Now to complicate matters, I have my own domain name, for the sake of this let's call it plex.mydomain.com. This domain's 'A' Record is updated by a Dynamic DNS client on my router, I know this works as when I browse to https://plex.mydomain.com:32400/web I get full unimpeded access to my Plex server. This is fine, but for friends who access the server this is less than ideal as it doesn't work in apps like Android, iOS or Roku.

**LIGHT BULB MOMENT APPROACHING **

Browsing in the "Advanced" settings under "Network" on the Plex Server there is a field called "Custom server access URLs"... Excellent, after a little searching through the support documentation it seems all that is needed here is the domain which when typed into a browser, provides access to the server. Off I go and fill in the box with "https://plex.mydomain.com:32400"

Slowly but surely the realisation sets in that this field in the settings doesn't appear to do anything at all, All i get is "Indirect" connections to my server when I'm outside my network.

Surely someone must know the solution to this? Someone on the Plex dev team want to explain exactly what the "Custom server access URLs" field does (if anything)?
