Optimizer Output Quality

Greetings,

I am still fairly new to Plex and all the other associated software products for alternative TV and movie viewing. Here is my set up. I am running Plex Media Server on Windows 7, using Sonarr to fetch my TV and CouchPotato and torrent sites to find movies. I am using sabnzbd and qbittorrent to download. Content is to be primarily viewed on my 60" plasma HDTV over my WiFi via a chromecast plugged into the TV and controlled by the Plex app on my android phone. The storage is a Synology DS416j NAS, which is on a wired LAN connection to my router.

I have become interested in optimizing disk space while still retaining 720p quality and minimizing on-the-fly transcoding. I run into frequent instances where the Plex transcoder crashes while trying to view content. The fact that I am actively downloading content via sabnzbd and QB while I try to build up my libraries is possibly a contributing factor in the crashes. I started out using Handbrake to greatly reduce disk requirements for movies and specifying the video and audio characteristics that Plex states are needed for direct play or at least direct streaming and then started looking at Plexs optimization feature since it's a lot easier than Handbrake.

The question I have is related to the output from the optimization process. I have subbed in the optimized version of multiple HD shows for the original so I can easily play them through my setup. The issue is that once I rescan the TV show with Sonarr it reports all the transcoded videos as SDTV despite my having done a custom HD optimization. I don't know if this is a Sonarr issue or if Plex is optimizing everything as SD despite my specs.

Any ideas?
