Help with streaming Plex on Synology NAS

Hi All

Recently got myself a nice new NAS - Synology 916+ and loving it.

I have just setup Plex and access it primarily from my ps4, as well as MBP and a couple of mobiles. Rarely (actually never) would multiple devices access plex simultaneously, 95% of usage is through ps4.

So I assumed that given the quad core CPU in the 916+ that streaming and transcoding would be fine, but it really really struggles. Resource monitor shows CPU usage at 99% when streaming/transcoding.

For example, when streaming/transcoding a Movie it pauses, staggers and is almost unwatchable. Very often, a little message comes up saying "your server is not powerful enough to play this movie...."

This doesnt happen everytime, just on the movies that it seems to have to transcode - generally these are the higher quality ones 4gb and up. I downloaded a few 4k movies and it can barely get past the first 10 seconds.

So I'm wondering is there a problem with my NAS, or is it something to do with the settings I have? My network is run by an Asus RT-AC88u router and everything is connected via ethernet. I also have 2 LAN cables going into the NAS.

I'll list below my settings and would really love some advice here:

Transcoder settings (Server)
-Transcoder quality - Prefer higher speed encoding
-Segmented transcoder timeout - 20
-Transcoder default duration - 120
-Transcoder default throttle buffer - 60
-Background transcoding x264 preset - Very Fast
-Prioritise streaming transcodes - tick

Player settings
-Local Quality - Original
-Remove Quality - 4mpbs
-Online Quality - 4mbps
-Direct Play - ticked
-Direct Stream - ticked
-Allow direct play of AAC audio - ticked
-Prefer AAC audio - not ticked
