Over the past year I have converted all my movies to MKV using makeMKV. I am using a 2012 Mac Mini Server as the server and the content is stored on a Diskstation 1512+. From the start I was watching with an AppleTV 4 along with occasional iPhone/iPad and browser use. Didn't have any problems.
A month ago I moved to a new home with a dedicated home theater. At the start I was using a Xbox One S since I already had it. From the start I was having problems with the video breaking up with rainbow pixelation. After some searching I saw complaints of Xbox doing this with video with low reference frames. So I ordered a Roku Express. Ran this for a week or so. No longer had issues with the rainbow, but it was constantly buffering and I was getting errors regarding network quality. Whenever I try to transcode I get errors that the server isn't powerful enough. Did some reading and apparently the Roku Express isn't very powerful, plus serving full bitrate MKV's over wifi isn't the best option.
So I returned the Roku and picked up a Shield Pro. I planned to use it as my server but then I read about the limitation of using the Shield as a server. Upon my first playback with the Shield I am now having the problems with the rainbow pixelation again. Does the Shield also have an issue with low reference frames? Anything I can do to fix it? TIA
