I am a bit confused about what Apple TV settings to use to get surround sound with the least amount of re-encoding.
My setup:
Synology DS415+ NAS for PMS
Apple TV 4 with Plex app
- View HD HDMI extractor outputs optical S/PDIF to
- Yamaha soundbar with Dolby (soon to be upgraded to the newer model, which has DTS support as well).
When I play a movie with Dolby 5.1 AC-3 sound and the Apple TV surround sound setting to "Best", I don't get the "Dolby" lighting up on my soundbar. But maybe this is because Plex is sending LPCM to the soundbar? It's hard to tell with the soundbar whether I'm getting a 5.1 stream or not ...
When I set the Apple TV surround sound setting to "Dolby 5.1", I do get the Dolby lighting up on my soundbar. But does this mean the Apple TV is simply re-encoding Plex's LCPM back to Dolby again? What if I play a DTS file? Which Apple TV setting is best there?
I'm pretty confused about what Plex is doing, what Apple TV does on these various settings, and how they all play together. Is there a post explaining it somewhere? I've searched around, but just seen a few threads that seem give outdated information (e.g., I saw a thread that displayed a Dolby setting in the PMS Transcoder options, but I don't see that anymore.)
Thanks!
